Slot machines - one armed bandits

Slot machines have been a hit among aging ladies as long as I can remember. In the past they usually came with a lever on the side of the machine, also referred to “the one arm” that spins the will, and they were cleverly referred to as “one armed bandits” because of their greedy nature. The slot machine is often viewed upon as the form of gaming that creates most problem gamblers.

Online slot machines have a much higher payout percentage than the traditional one armed bandits. This payout percentage is pre-programmed, so if the average percentage is e.g. 95%, the machine will pay out $950 of $1000 invested in the long run on an average basis. As with bingo, it comes down to luck, and there is no way of getting an edge against the house, but with huge jackpots you can get very lucky.

The online slot machines come in many names, shapes and sizes. The most common formats are the 3-reel and the 5-reel slots, with the difference obviously being the number of reels. The reel is a “wheel” with different symbols on it, and when you press start or play the wheels are put in motion by the random number generator. The symbols that are shown in front of the reel and in the game window are the ones that count, usually the ones in the centre, and you win with different combinations, usually the biggest win is when you get three or five equal symbols on all reels.

Almost all gaming rooms offer these slot machines.
